Proposal would skip more than Quebec

Rob Antle reports in today's St. John's Telegram:

Proposal would skip Quebec [link won't work for very long]

A joint venture owned 50-50 by energy firms in British Columbia and Maine is proposing an alternative sub-sea and land-based route for Lower Churchill power to the United States... The firm would run a line from dam locations east across Labrador. A sub-sea, high-voltage cable would cross onto the island of Newfoundland north of the Strait of Belle Isle, then traverse over land to the south coast. ... [Paul] Manson [of Sea Breeze Power] said that would allow Labrador power to be used in Newfoundland, and would also allow for the development of "stranded potential" for wind power on the island.

[...]

"Routing through Newfoundland would give access to inexpensive power to the people of Newfoundland, and provide a very good base for attracting business to that area, much the same way that inexpensive power in British Columbia and Quebec has benefited those economies," Manson said.

What about the communities — a majority of them, with a majority of the Labrador population — which rely, in whole or in part, on diesel generation for their power supply?

Is Labrador electricity only being used "in the province" when it has been successfully exported for use in Newfoundland?

Do any of the twenty-five proposals now under consideration involve relieving Labrador, especially coastal Labrador, of its dependence on expensive diesel generation or — irony or ironies — the importation of power from the Hydro-Quebec plant at Robertson Lake?

Wow never really knew about or thought about Labrador having electric power? Just assumed you would have all been taped into the lower churchill. OOPs

Your beef has merit but what are the alternatives? A beef is just that if you don't put forth A solution or at least the idea of a solution.

Of the top of my head I would have to say subsidized power generation equialent pricing to neighbours.
Wind generation, solar generation, Transmissions lines from either Upper or Lower Churchill. All of these suggestions are just that a cost analysis would need to be done etc etc.

But without something on paper your misfortune will never become known.

MUN does lots of studies maybe one could be done on this topic.

Minimun everyone should get rebates on energy efficient bulbs, cold water wash detergent, R2000 homes. What a great place to promote and advertize R2000 homes!

Petitions work well also to bring your interests to political circles.

Just isn't right IMHO

Hold Govt some part of the year in Labrador. Hey they could all go fishing hehe.

IMHO Labrador is the jewel in Newfoundland and Labradors Crown.
Also it is the future of both NL as the gateway to the rest of Canada and if Canada doesn't live up to it's terms of union well. NL needs to push harder on your behalf. We will never be one until there is a fixed link. That won't be a possibility until there are roads at either end. I see the Trans Labrador Highway is coming along. Baby steps are better than no steps at all.

The Lower churchill should be as much about linking Newfoundland and Labrador as it is about the power. Really they are one and the same as far as NL is concerned.

Hang in there we hear you and are fighting on your behalf.

Elementary my dear watson. If it goes to the island it has to go through labrador and along all of the communities along the way if anyone should be pushing for a Corridor across NL it should be Labrador. Power flows both ways you knoe and with a power corridor would come a fixed link. and completion of Sept Iles Blanc Sablanc road hopefully. It's up to us to stop the 400 people petition from NS at making a fixed link. Know you enemy my friend.
