1809

Of all the cockamamie excuses for a tourism celebration, the designation of 2009 as the year to celebrate Bob Bartlett's [sic] trip to the North Pole [sic] has to rank among the cockamemiest.

I guess John F. forgot to remember to remind Danny and his Newfoundland and Newfoundland department of tourism of that other, much more significant anniversary, on this very date, that will occur in 2009.

You and I might find the 1809 event much more interesting. I think the average tourist or average NLer is probably more moved by a polar adventure. . .

I don't think it's such a bad idea to celebrate Bartlett's journey. But as you say, there is another important anniversary.

Bartlett didn't do anything of enduring significance. It's an idiotic excuse for a tourism theme.

It would be pretty g.d. pathetic if the average NLer (Newfoundland and Labradorer?) is more moved by the fact that in 1909, a guy from Newfoundland sailed a ship, like he did many times before or after, rather than by one of the pivotal and founding moments of the province.

Fair point. I think some of Bartlett's other voyages are more amazing anyway. . . .
