Back in Dannystan

The appointment of the former President of The Party as impartial Chief Electoral Officer was given notice of in the House of Assembly yesterday (oddly, not by Glorious Leader):
MR. RIDEOUT: Mr. Speaker, I give notice that I will ask leave to move the following resolution:

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Assembly as follows:

WHEREAS section 4(1) of the Elections Act, 1991 provides that the Office of Chief Electoral Officer will be filled by resolution of the House of Assembly; and

WHEREAS subsection 34(2) of the House of the Assembly Act provides that a Commissioner of Members’ Interests be appointed by the House of Assembly, on motion of the Premier following consultation with the Leader of the Official Opposition and representatives of other registered political parties having representation in the House of Assembly;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Mr. Paul Reynolds be appointed Chief Electoral Officer and Commissioner of Members’ Interests.
For some reason, it didn't make any of the local media today. And the whole, sordid affair has yet to receive any national press at all. (Hint to national media: Danny is shopping himself to you in Toronto today.)

This is the type of practice that Canadian elections officials, working in democratic development abroad, work hard to stamp out.

It is also the type of practice that Canadian election observers, working in struggling democracies abroad, would condemn.

But in Dannystan, no one — perhaps other than Rob Antle — bats an eyelash.
