Bill Rowe: get a clue

Bill Rowe is wrong.

Bill Rowe today repeated the ignorant lie that Marine Atlantic is the only surface route to or from "the province".

Leaving aside the geographical ignorance that "the province" and "the island" are not the same thing, and that there are two highways and a rail line, surface routes both, leading into and out of "the province", the "hostage to Marine Atlantic" lie isn't even true of the island of Newfoundland.

There are two other ferries, both run by the provincial government, connecting Newfoundland to mainland Canada. They are the Straits ferry service, which carries 10 to 15% of the number of passengers Marine Atlantic does, linking St. Barbe to Blanc Sablon; and the Sir Robert Bond route connecting Lewisporte to Cartwright and Goose Bay.

In addition, there is private shipping carrying freight and bulk cargoes to and from Newfoundland and various other ports.

Bill Rowe also left unchallenged the assertion by a caller that the headquarters for Marine Atlantic should be in the province.

Newsflash: it is.

Perhaps the Newfoundland nationalist campaigns get so entrenched that people forget when they win one, but: Marine Atlantic's head office moved from Moncton to St. John's — the one in Newfoundland, the city in which Bill Rowe lives and works — at the end of 2000.

That's almost seven years ago. Marine Atlantic's head office is now:
Marine Atlantic Inc.
10 Fort William Place, Suite 802
Baine Johnston Centre
St. John's, NL A1C 1K4
Phone: (709) 772-8957
Fax: (709) 772-8956

I’m not surprised there is confusion as to where Marine Atlantic HQ is located. Take the ordinary Jane or John doe who has lived in St. John’s all there lives, they would have trouble locating the location too, I was a witness to it.
This is not in defense of any one, but a condemnation of the pure stupidity of those that be responsible.
To wit.
The Fort William building on Fort William Place in the City Of St. John’s NL has only one moniker on it of any significance. That Moniker is a small to medium sign saying “Aliant”.
That’s it. No signage on the building, no street sign, no other clue giving people direction to the Fort William Building, or Place, nothing saying it maybe even the “Bain Johnson Centre”.
Maybe it’s a Newfoundland thing, maybe it’s an oversight, maybe its signs are hidden away behind something else.

But in that building with the “Aliant” sign sites the Marine Atlantic office, it says so on the tenants list near the lift, bad luck if your getting on in years and left your glasses in the car though, very small signage indeed.
Also there is VBNC and some other companies doing quite well in Labrador.

That may be so, but after years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years of complaining about the location of the HQ, it moved, with great fanfare, in January 2001.

You'd think someone could have rememebered that.

But nope.

They only remember that in 1998 and 1986 the HQ was in Moncton.

I swear, the Newfoundland Nationalists still sleep with a blunderbuss under the bed, just in case D'Iberville comes back.

Why would the average member of the general public need to find the Marine Atlantic head office anyway?
