Canada Day

While the usual suspects; the PWG-wavers; the myth-makers and myth-weavers; the nationalists culture vultures who have built "artistic" careers and nice houses in St. John's on Canada Council grants and freelance or contract work with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation; the rats in the basement of the LSPU Hall; the columnists and self-styled journalists who draw their conclusions first and come up with their facts — if any — later; the revisionists; the conspiracy theorists; the kooks and the rest of the hand-wringers; while they mourn the country they supposedly lost on March 31, 1949, I celebrate the country, the wonderful country, that I gained, thanks, in no small part, to my ancestors' wisdom in voting nearly 4 to 1 to join the Canada they had long felt more attached to than to the island that supposedly had jurisdiction over them.

Newfoundland nationalists, yes you, running around today, spouting and sputtering the Newfoundland English version of je me souviens, wearing, metaphorically or otherwise, your cute little black armbands, you will do well to remember this: for over 100 years, the ancestors you praise and glorify denied to mine the very franchise, the public benefits and all the incidents of the nationhood you melodramatically mourn today.

Don't ask me to mourn for your so-called nation.

It wasn't mine. And isn't.

Je me souviens, aussi. Je me souviens bien. Et je me souviendra toujours.

O Canada! nunagivaptigit
Inungnit naglingersiorpotit
Omativut tettdlarput
TatuKoruptigit
Nunatsiavut! pivlutit
Pigâtsainarpogut
O Canada! NunatsiaK
pigârpogut, inôjogut illa,
Pigârpogut pivlutit Canada
Vive le Canada, et vive le Labrador. Happy 57th.

Non. Labradore is the name of the blog, not the place.

Canada denied franchise to people too. Indeed many Labardorians didn't have franchise until later in their time in Canada . . . but I guess Wally is willing to forgive CERTAIN evils . .

Which Labradorians would those be?

What status Indians in Labrador?

Until very recently there weren't any. The Innu of Labrador have had the vote all along, for as long as Labrador has had the vote (since 1946); in fact, the fact that they did was one of the reasons that the Status Indian prohibition was repealed from the Elections Act in the 1960s.

That's "for one". What are the others?

Newfoundland enfranchised natives before Canada and even influenced Canada to do the same . . . I've never heard you remark on this before. . . I guess it doesn't fit in with your usual anti-island rants.

It does nothing to detract from the fact that for over 100 years, Newfoundland denied the vote to ANYONE, native or non, in Labrador.

Now, how about naming those "others" in Labrador that Canada disenfranchised after Confederation?

For a self-proclaimed "federalist" you sure do your best to alienate people like me who want to keep Canada together. It is the first step in achieving world harmony. Bringing peace and goodwill to your own country without forcing narrow-mindedness down everybody's throats. I am a diehard 'keep Canada together no matter what the cost' kinda guy. Your sentence splicing/parsing, ranting and overzealous behaviour display a federalism of entitlement beyond the federation I want for my grandchildren's future.

Instead of being so pious and condescending when you make your brash and intemperate assertions, why don't you explain what it is that nobody else sees (other than you & Ed)? No you would rather talk down to people instead of educating them.

Don't ever admit you're wrong and never say you're sorry...

I am apologizing here and now for posting that you were an, "... egotistical-wet-fart...!

I was and still am on a learning curve regarding both provincial and federal politics. I will form my opinions and arguments based on all the partisan crap espoused by reds, blues, oranges and greens. Good ideas for the whole of Canada and the provinces should NEVER be held hostage by any party attempting to push partisan agenda and issues of favouritism.

I pledge that I will:
1. try to play fair;
2. learn from history;
3. avoid name calling;
4. teach children about politics, ethics, fair play;
5. share information to empower people to make the best choices possible;
6. arrest hatred and do my best to stop hate crime;
7. protect the weak, disabled and elderly; and
8. Stop the abuse of our social systems and tax dollars by all.

Item 8 is designed to include government officials (white collar criminals) as well as welfare and other system abusers (blue collar criminals).

The era of entitlement will need to get by watchdogs like me. It may sound Utopian but it will grow more rapidly than did these governments who abuse their positions of power.

Messieurs Harper and Emerson should be dismissed and enter bi-elections. Not just Emerson, Harper too! He compromised our trust the first day in office.

I will rant sporadically. It will be less about protecting politicians and more about protecting our country's collaborative effort with other countries to make the entire world accountable to a humane society towards people of the planet. I also support balancing the good treatment of the preservation of the creatures of the planet to their usefulness in our diets and the world economy.

I hope I haven't given you too much information to digest...

My thoughts for now,

FredfromCBS

You know WJM you make a good point by posting this on the very day Canada actually became whole. The day Newfoundland/Labrador completed Canada is the day that should be celebrated not July 1 which is was and will always be a day of mourning for Newfoundland/Labradorians because of the Battle at Beaumont Hamel where 801 NL'ians went over the hill and the next day only 8 showed up for roll call.
This isn't a Patriotism issue this is just highlight of the disrespect and contempt Canada has shown and continues to show towards NL then and now.

From failing hands we pass the torch.
Forget me nots are the official flower of remembrance.
If NL'ians weren't to wear black arm bands on July 1 I would think it disrespectfull personally towards the fallen no matter what country they were and are from.

Canada should rectify this terrible injustice and change Canada day to march 31 which is the actual day Canada became a whole country.
