Another tale of two standards

Another day, another problem with the provincially-operated Labrador marine transportation system.

And yet Hospitality Newfoundland and Somethingoranother maintains its curious radio silence on anything to do with Labrador ferry service, its shortcomings, or its impact on tourism in distant Somethingoranother.

One, two, three press releases and news items so far this year about Marine Atlantic.

What is HNN doing, if anything, to represent the best interests of tourism development in Labrador? And if anything, why are they so hesitant to go public about it?

I feel the People of Labrador Goose Bay south’s pain....... I really do. I just wish I could convince the politicians of all levels, bureaucrats and service providers that the people of Labrador Rigolet North are feeling pain just as great when it comes to the provincially operated Labrador marine transportation service.
As one minister in the Nunatsiavut government put it to me recently, “why don’t you organize a meeting with all the players, I will make myself available if such a meeting was to be convened”. Now that’s pain.

It's nice when politicians make themselves available, eh. that is painful.

I’m a bit light on the details yet. Yesterday the M/V Northern Ranger had around 11 tourists on board on Arrival in Nain, a high for the season I believe. Last year the average was around 20. The word is that also on board was a representative of the provincial tourist apparatchiki. Not sure which organization or what level, busy with other pressing things. Pity about all the mechanical problems the vessel is having though. This trip it is engine problems.

Our tourism geniuses need to compare notes with Groupe Desgagné, the company which operates a much less well-appointed ship to similarly isolated communities along the Lower North Shore of Quebec, carrying locals and almost all summer and fall a full complement of tourists... and feeds them real local seafood, not deep-fried battered garbage, to boot.

Groupe Desgagné that has a familiar ring to it, are they funded by group action?

No, they are in the shipping industry, not the porn industry.
