Municipalities Newfoundland and Newfoundland

Wayne Ruth, President of Municipalities Newfoundland and... Newfoundland and... Newfoundland and Something, is pickled tink with the provincial Energy Dan, er, Energy Plan:
MNL welcomes Energy Plan that highlights sustainable communities

St. John’s, NL (September 11, 2007) – MNL President Wayne Ruth is applauding the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Energy Plan that assists municipalities in finding alternate means of energy.

“We’re glad to see that government is being socially and economically responsible for sustainability,” said Ruth. “When a community is self-reliant, the outcome will filter down through all levels of society. The allocation of monies to retrofit homes will save residents financially, plus making their homes energy efficient and comfortable.”

Ruth would also like to see monies allocated to retrofit municipal buildings, arenas and swimming pools. “Energy efficient buildings would mean less stress on municipal government budgets, better facilities, and savings that could address some of the infrastructure deficit,” noted Ruth.

President Ruth recently returned from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) meetings in New Brunswick where one of the topics of discussion was climate change. “Every municipality in the country has been advocating an action plan on climate change,” said Ruth. “Government’s Energy Plan promises environmental sustainability and we’re very happy to see this initiative move forward.”

MNL looks forward to being a part of the Energy Plan and will work in partnership with government to promote economic self-reliance.

Municipalities Newfoundland & Labrador was formed in 1951 as an umbrella organization mandated to represent municipal government interests, and as a vehicle for municipal leaders to share information and resources. MNL represents the 282 cities and towns in Newfoundland and Labrador that service 89 per cent of the population and their more than 2,000 leaders.
Given some of the noise this morning from, among others, the Combined Councils of Labrador, you have to wonder — how many of the Labrador towns who are members of Municipalities Newfoundland and Something are as enthusiastic as Wayne Ruth?

And is Wayne Ruth wearing his Municipalities Newfoundland and Something hat when he hits the media to applaud Our Dear Premier?

Or is he wearing his would-be PC MHA hat?

My no partisan view is that President Ruth’s view on this very dodgy Energy Plan is way too partisan.
President Ruth seems to have closed ears when it comes to the Integral part of the Province {Labrador}. No where does it say how the coastal communities of Labrador will benefit from this Hydro Development, except to talk about rate subsidies. The subsidy we have at the moment is fine to a point, but goes no where in helping present business or help to promote business development in the future.
The much touted contribution of reducing greenhouse gases as a province leaves us out in the cold too, looks like we will be the 2% that will have to keep spewing diesel oil fumes into the air for the foreseeable long term future. Not to mention no mention of any alternative programs in short or medium terms.
As a plan it must be graded as an F IMO.
