Feudian Slips
Our Dear Feud is proving to be a regular goldmine of malaprop.
At the outset of the latest battle, the one over what was or was not said behind closed doors, Danny inadvertanly let it be known that he sees his holy struggle, and the struggle (in his eyes) of all of Newfoundland and Afterthought, as being not just with Conservatives, but with Canada itself:
I mean, y’know, y’know, at the end of all of this, y’know, I think the people of Newfoundland will — and Labrador — will clearly state to the Government of Canada — or the fed- — I’m sorry, — to the Conservative Party of Canada — that they’re not going to elect any candidates…Then, Great Lawyer™ showed a little haziness about the whole concept of hearsay, and invents a new class of evidence: the Admission In Favour Of Interest:
Well I was there, and I’m saying it happened, my officials are there, and they’re saying it happened. I actually left that meeting, and shortly afterwards actually conveyed that message to my cabinet. In other words, if you don’t believe Danny, ask Danny instead!
And now, O.D.P. verbally, and almost certainly inadvertantly, demotes His Dear Cabinet, telling Steve Bartlett of the Western Star:
I came out of that meeting and informed my deputy ministers that, in fact, this had been said and was quite proud of myself that I hadn’t reacted to this nasty comment that he had made...Proud of himself! Strong and determined, too, no doubt. But the ministers have clearly been put in their place: they are the deputies.
And he concludes, saying of Harper:
He’s prepared to distort the truth and, if that is any indication of the measure of the person, then he is not good for this country.Heartily agreed!
Distorting the truth is bad. A person who doesn’t tell the truth, if that is any indication of their measure, is not good.
