Comment se traduit "pass the buck"?

Radio-Canada reports that the Council of Mayors on the Lower North Shore have extract a promise from André Boisclair and the PQ to honour the $100-million commitment to beginning construction on the Route 138 Lower North Shore extension. (Despite the recent strengthening in support for the ADQ, l'équipe Mario Dumont is still a very long shot to form even a minority government, and longer still to win Duplessis, mais, on verra.)

And, to boot:

(The President of the Council of Mayors of the Lower North Shore, Randy Jones is of the same opinion as Mr. Monger. The important thing, he says, is to continue to look for the financing.

Mr. Jones says that André Boisclair has been up-front. "Any leader is going to have trouble coming up with the total amount. You have to start somewhere, and I think that $100-million is a start, and then we'll go look for money from the other level of government.")
It's not the first time, of course, that a provincial highway committment has been made contingent on federal financing. Not at all.

Nor, for that matter, the only province. Plus ils changent, plus ils sont la même chose.

Do you mean to say that there is an equivalent evil to the current NL government? In your obsessed bitching about the PC government (I supppose the Liberals would be more enlightened?) is this the first time you've realized that things can be as backwards or bad elsewhere?

No, I mean to say no such thing!

In your obsessed bitching about the PC government (I supppose the Liberals would be more enlightened?)

There is nothing I've said about DannyWilliamsAdministrationNewfoundlandLabrador that wouldn't have had (or didn't have) an equivalent when it came to Tobin or Grimes.

Not only would the provincial Liberals be no more enlightened in power, they very clearly, on their record, were not.

is this the first time you've realized that things can be as backwards or bad elsewhere?

They can?

All provincial governments like Ottawa to sign big cheques, preferably with blank "memo" lines, but Charest's fervent hope that Ottawa will kick in its "share" has rien on the NL government, of whatever stripe, and its long history of buck-passing and blame-shifting.

And no province has as immature relations with other governments, federal or fellow provincial, as DannyWilliamsAdministrationNewfoundlandLabrador.

How dare you say that. Danny is over in Ireland right now doing God's work. And next month he'll be at Canadian Idol helping us too. And if we win a medal in the Yukon this week, he will move heaven and earth to be there. And his Ministers go to Ottawa on Fridays to lobby on our behalf. You are a traitor, WJM, and should be sent to the gulag. Who do you think you are, the CBC?

Forgive me, Danny, for I have sinned. I will say 500 Hail Dannys, and vote 1,000 times for Newfoundlanders. And Labradorians in Canadian Idol, even though we all know it is rigged by the CBC. And when that's all done, I will report to the nearest re-education camp.

I won't defend the NL government (because I'm no fan Mark) but I'd say "immature" is well demonstrated by those last two comments.

Stephen,

Immaturity is turning the office of Premier into a cheerleading position.

Immaturity is in equating a dissenting voice with treachery.

Immaturity is in treating voters as idiots.

Immaturity is in keeping the legislature open for the shortest period in history and making Open Line the only forum for policy discussion.

Immaturity truly is in the eye of the beholder. If a few sarcastic digs at this premier's words and actions makes me immature in your eyes, then you will just have to live with it.

Some of us care about the fact that the province has become a genuine banana republic (a trend which started under the last government). Maybe that's part of the reason so many of us leave.

It's not enough to "not be fan". That's the easy way out. The province needs people who will question the antics of this administration and shift the political discourse in the province to one of substance rather than blind loyalty, "pride", and symbolism.

The Opposition isn't doing it. The media isn't doing it. The business community isn't doing it. But someone has to.

Without bananas.

A bakeapple republic!

Mmmmm.... bakeapples...

Hey! Let's apply for an R2D2 grant to do it! There'll be no question of competition with existing enterprise!

Mark, I agree with you completely on your various points. We live in a province where there's frighteningly little diversity of thought and initiative. "Not being a fan" of Danny doesn't express my feelings that there needs to be a massive wake-up call and that things need to be turned upside down. The current government and it's leader are absolute failures (along with their counterparts the Liberals) in contributing to the health this democracy and the vitality of the province. They've failed so many segments of society in this province and I think you're very confused if you think that I'm a supporter of either. WJM on the other hand finds at least one political party to be virtuous and somehow better than all the rest.

Unfortunately I don't see what you're "doing" - if you call your comments here on this page "action" I won't be joining you. What else are you doing besides this?

Which political party is that?

And what gives you that impression?

I will admit that this could be another Wallace Mclean quoted in this article:

If it is you Wally - you're a hypocrite of the highest order.

How so?

So it is you. I'd say you're a hypocrite because you spend all of your time ranting about one political party which is no different than the one you work for.
The Federal Liberals are about as corrupt and cynical as it gets. Party politics are the most refined form of organized crime. You'd be doing more honest work for if you spent all your negative energy trying to build up social and community groups in Labrador or raising awareness of issues in a way that wasn't as immature or poisoned as you currently go about it.

Outside of Montreal in the dying days of the Chretien regime, I don't see how you can make that statement. Seriously.

When sensible people abandon our political system (which is admittedly wrought with flaws) it only further entrenches the rotten apples who benefit from it.

One thing federal Liberals, unlike provincial Liberals, Tories, and Dippers, don't have: politicians' slush funds.

That's right. The Liberal Party of Canada is........good. Maybe they've made mistakes once (dying days of the Chretien era) but certainly that was the only time. You must be kidding. Also, WJM, are you serious? Seriously? Why mention provincial parties as a way of proving Federal Libs to be "Better". They're all corrupt and arrogant.

Like I said political parties are the most refined form of organized crime. The party system is a bastardization of true democratic spirit. Elected representatives should be responsible to their constituents alone - screw the "party line". When "sensible" people abandon any belief in or support of democracy we end up with an oligarchy composed of the Federal Liberals, Federal Conservatives, Provincial Liberals Provincial Conservatives etc etc etc etc etc.

All Federal Liberals, or all provincial parties?

Oh - and unless you enable your profile viewing, this will be the last of your comments which stands.

Sorry, I was logged in by my gmail account not under my blogger id.

All political parties and their supporters on all levels are are corrupt by virtue of their intentional deviation from true democratic spirit. All, parties, all levels: corrupt.

Also, feel free to pull a "Sue" on me and block me or whatever. This blog, your vanity rant against all things not Federal or Liberal, is nothing but a freakshow distraction anyway.

Bye!

I have no intention of pulling a "Sue" on anyone, but I won't have scurrilous semi-anonymous garbage. As "Mt Pearligan" you are more than welcome to stick around.

Sure - let's have 308 governments all independent of one another. Building national programs and determining national priorities requires compromise and the borkerage of competing interests. Any politcal party that purports to be perfect or completely reflective of anyone's needs is about as stupid as any voter thinking their representative can be either.

Send 308 people to the house of commons with no affiliation to one another and ask them to write a budget, to develop the parameters of the most basic social, economic, security, or environmental program. It's always easy for people to shit on political parties, they're a pretty simple target to dump on, but I would hate to see what our country might look like without them.

Seriously.

Oh, and

"We live in a province where there's frighteningly little diversity of thought and initiative."

Isn't really true. More and more of us moved away and found at least some of what we were looking for.
