The Province and Labrador (II)

Geopolitically-challenged comment-poster and self-described "big supporter of Labradors place in N&L", Josh Taylor, is still a bit hazy on the whole "Labradors place in N&L" concept:

Don't subsidise this route, it's crazy. There is no traffic other than a few Europeans on vacation and with their strong currency they can easily afford the flights. They knew it was expensive to get here when they bought the places.

Now, I would be for lower taxes on airlines (provincial) that operate witin NL, such as flights between Labrador and the airports on the province.

Don't suppose it could be an oversight like your typos that you got very nasty about when it was pointed out to you.

Nope. Don't suppose that at all.

First off, it's not a typo. Look up "typo".

Second, you see and hear that bizarre distinction between "the province" and "Labrador" all the time — from Newfoundlanders. There's a reason why the post is called The Province and Labrador (II).

Why don't we just refer to it as the province with no distinctions? Maybe we should revert back to just Newfoundland. What's the answer? As for the "typo" my apologies- didn't think it was necessary to be that exact. I do believe you got the message.

Ask a Newfoundlander. They are the only people who make the distinction between "the province" and "Labrador".

Maybe we should revert back to just Newfoundland.

Why not just call it all Labrador?

Fail to see the reasoning considering I live in the "province" and I rarely hear "the province and Labrador" unless you are a mole who makes frequent trips to the "province" doing surveys. When was the border of Labrador established as being a divide between Que and Newfoundland? Why don't you post it on your blog or somewhere that can be seen by all "Newfies" and suggest the name Labrador for "the province." Think there will be many followers? Must be careful of my wording otherwise you will get your knickers in a knot again.

As a Newfoundlander, your ears tune it out.

You hear it all the time.

As in when the Premier's press secretary said that Himself wasn't available to comment on a subject, but would be when he "gets back to the province."

He was in Nain.

Or how so and so is running "across the province". From St. John's to Port aux Basques.

Or about how someone has "circumnavigated the province" in a boat made out of rubber boots or wine corks or some such.

When was the border of Labrador established as being a divide between Que and Newfoundland?

1825.

Why don't you post it on your blog or somewhere that can be seen by all "Newfies"

Like here, you mean?

About as many as there would be in Labrador for putting the name Newfoundland on anything other than the island of that name.

By the way, Rick, you are the latest in a series of one-named posters who has no profile.

What's up with that?

Sorry, have to disagree. As a "Newfie" I frequently hear the island and Labrador.

I don't know how many "Newfies" read your blog. There are some regulars. Unfortunately I am not one. I do read it from time to time or do a quick check but the anti-Newfism day after day gets to be monotonous and on times nauseating so I tend to avoid it.
If there was the occasional break from the sarcasm and cynicism I would be a more frequent reader and contributor.

Is there something wrong with the one name posting? Why do you need a profile? It's likely some of your brothers know me. I seem to recall some time back asking about your profile but that garnered no reply.

Now, back to the question. What kind of support do you think you would recieve from the "Newfies" with respect to naming the "province" Labrador?

Give it a whirl!

Thanks for proving my point: you tune out the instances of "the province and Labrador".

I hear them and see them.

Other Labradorians do.

But Newfoundlanders are oblivious.

Anti-Newfism?

Care to point out some specific examples?

It's funny how anony-slaggers keep accusing me of being anti-Newfoundland. Care to sign your real, full, name to that accusation, "Rick"?

If there was the occasional break from the sarcasm and cynicism I would be a more frequent reader and contributor.

I am not going to apologize for being sarcastic and cynical; it's in my nature.

Is there something wrong with the one name posting?

Not until you start making baseless personal accusations, there isn't.

Please sign your real, full name to the accusation that I am "anti-Newf", or this is the last posting I'll approve by you, "Rick".

Now, back to the question. What kind of support do you think you would recieve from the "Newfies" with respect to naming the "province" Labrador?

None! Like I say, about the same level of support you'd get from Labradorians for renaming Labrador as Newfoundland.

It's analogy. Give it a whirl!

Looking forward to your de-lurking, "Rick".

Or is it "Clarence"?

This is not meant to be posted but it is Rick and your brother? Ev would maybe know who I am and if he doesn't Eldred Davis certainly does. As for the single name- I went to "view my complete profile", however there wasn't much to read about WJM. I know, I know it is your blog. And from here on I shall have my ears at the ready for "the province and Labrador." As for the anti-Newfie, I don't know what else to call it. As I stated several blogs ago I am not the government; any decisions made by your leaders is reflected in anti-Newfieism by Labradorians. Of the 25,000 or so population of Labrador, how many are actually Labradorians? Of the retirees on the mainland portion of the province, how many actually retire in Labrador? BTW,didn't the feds announce the scuttling of the ROROs on a Friday?

It is true that many, but not all, Newfoundlanders do what wjm said - use any number of word combinations when referring to the province. I hear it all the time as well. It's an unconscious thing for most I'm guessing. There's also a Canadian comparison. From time to time national media people often refer to something happening all across Canada, from Vancouver to Halifax, and either forget or ignore Newfoundland and Labrador. I don't believe it is a malicious thing, but it makes you relate to how people in Labrador feel about a similar omission. WJM uses that analogy to show how Newfoundlanders, again, not all, at times do a similar thing. That is not being anti-Newfoundland.

Mr. Cheeseman: I trust you have never lived in Labrador.

No I haven't, but what point are you trying to make? For Newfoundland, what I said is true.

Neat trick, WJ. It won't be long now.
