Work on repairing a pothole-filled highway in central Newfoundland will start this year, Transportation Minister John Hickey says.
Engineers from the transportation and works department have visited the Buchans Highway to review damage caused by industrial traffic from the new Duck Pond mine.

"Are we going get it all done? No, we're probably not going to get it all done, but we are certainly going to make a start on it."

A small group of commuters blocked traffic near a busy St. John's-area highway Monday, demanding immediate repairs to a deteriorated access ramp.
"I said enough is enough," said motorist John Newell, who was fed up as he saw cars stuck on the access ramp to Pitts Memorial Drive at the Ruby Line intersection in Mount Pearl.

Newell persuaded a handful of other drivers to take part in the protest, which lasted about three hours. It ended when a dump truck arrived late Monday morning to pour asphalt into a string of large potholes.

That's not very surprising. The more I learn of transportation in the "Big Land", the less I'm shocked. Perhaps when the potholes start ingesting entire cars, something more then the obligatory wink and nod study will arise....
