Conjunction watch

There, Danny — now we're clear of all those "and"s

Six years ago, speaking to the constiutional amendment which made Newfoundland and Labrador the name of the province, Danny Williams said:

Mr. Speaker, on behalf of the Opposition, I am very proud to be a part of it. It is an honour to be here. It is a very historic time in the history of Newfoundland and Labrador, a time when the Province’s name has been formally changed. We have all done it over the years, we have all said it over the years, we make a point of always saying Newfoundland and Labrador but now it is official. Finally, I do commend the government for their initiative.

[Emphasis added]

Today's edition of VOCM Cracktalk was brought to you, in part, by a provincial government ad which states:

The salmon and trout stocks in NewfoundlandLabrador are very important to the future of NewfoundlandLabrador and its people… Help the Government of NewfoundlandLabrador, as well as the enforcement officers, in protecting the province.

It was also brought to you, in part, by the "PC Party of NewfoundlandLabrador", which informs us all that it has "opened" nominations in St. John's East at the close of business today.

They close on Sunday.

Obviously Danny Williams had someone else in mind.

Oh — and speaking of Danny, he happens to be the head of both the provincial government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the leader of the PC Party of Newfoundland and Labrador. The names of neither of these have been changed to drop the "and". And yet, here is Danny, who six years ago spoke and voted in favour of the name "Newfoundland and Labrador", dropping the conjunction.

Given that Danny's Minions can't so much as leave their desks to find a secluded place to fart without The Great Man's permission, the No Conjunctions Directive of 2006 must have come straight from the top.

Why?
